Dorie Clark - Strategic Thinking

Mindset:

  1. Questioning - Target
  2. Observation - Refine ; see trends
  3. Reflection- Have a breakthrough idea takes space not time
  • Not one strategy all the time.
  • Depends on situation
  • Your Strategy -- Your time -- creates difference in organizations
Leaders look beyond this, and want to see an employee's ability to conceptualize work and the benefits it will have for the company

Where I want to be in 3-5 years ?

Strategy

Vision? Transformation

How I am gonna achieve?

What will I do ? What I won't do?

Goals: Operationalizing the strategy

My goals with company goals at workplace

Tactic - Daily life m kya change - Concrete activities. How pieces fit together

  • Free your attention
  • Strategic Time
Macro Trends - Blockchain

Micro Trends - How it is effecting data science world

Read widely and often

well informed people and leaders

interesting and worrisome scenario

Scenario Building(future) - write it out

Weaknesses and opportunities

Understanding past : What happened , why happened

Train myself to see big picture/whole picture - ask if anything more

Holistic View

Not Just Living in Present , Intuition about Future , Clear Understanding of Past

Informed Strategy
Faulty Assumption ; Something Amazing - Not Possible

  1. Good Strategy does not need to be innovative
  2. It means making choices
  3. Look past success ; see competitor
  4. What is future of my industry ? Will I  achieve this breakthrough
  5. Solicit input from diverse resources
  6. People in orbit may not always to be consulted
  7. Uncover blindspots
Strategy In Line with Real World ; Not with an Ideal world
Example- Rishi
What are my current assets and allies?
My key relationships
Identify constraints (Not rosy plan ; reality check)
Overcome/ workaround them
Specific steps/tactics
Realistic and Attainable Strategy

Rejeesh- Decisions are taken beforehand. Meetings are just to ratify.
Nothing should come as surprise.
Take inputs/feedback/concerns from key people.
Taking it from each key  player. I do not want to have a question/surprise coming from key player.
HAVE PREMEETINGS

IDENTIFY OBJECTIONS- PREPARE
example- Rejeesh convinced for project of 1mn euros. How did he convince it. How does he came to number, he must had share reasons. how he arrived at that.

Think in reverse manner each of the key decisions and choices

Prepare for the objectors. You can never win  , but present them concession.

example- Mayank. He does not want to lose control

Creating accountability - keep track of timelines

Strategically accomplishing each day

Evaluating Strategy

1. It should not be murky goal - Data Scientist at Microsoft.
Unanswered: What does that mean which area I will be working as DS, what all technologies I would like to work on
Assumptions

2.Evaluate timely - progress

3. When and how the goal achieved if achieved

4. Document - Delibrate practice

not just doing every course /book
doing those course needed ones ; and why should work , how to make it work

SELF REFLECTION
QUESTION TO BE ASKED-- AUDIT

1. Am I failing to meet goals which I decided initially
2. What were the tactics
3. Was it flawed
4. Any change in situation
5.Promising Alternative if everything goes well.
Probably , if you getting growth. test the new path. scrutinize , don't rush

Everyone makes a plan , to get punched in mouth.

Do not cling to past assumption
Gauge circumstances. Adapt
Respond decisively ; move swiftly
take immediate steps to control and mitigate. and work parallely

Look for another path to accomplish vision. May be better route to destination
